In Sanskrit, “Bashpa” means steam and “Sweda In Sanskrit, “Bashpa” means steam and “Swedana” means to sweat or perspire.
Ayurvedic texts describe many forms of Swedana and define it as “whatever relieves stiffness, heaviness and cold in the body and produces sweat.”
Bashpa Swedana consists of applying herbal steam evenly to your body as you sit or lay comfortably in the steam box. With this method, your body can be fully steamed while your head remains outside and cool. In Ayurveda, it is believed that the eyes and head should be protected from overheating.
This treatment often follows a massage to further open your pores to absorb the herbal medicine through your skin and relax your body, reducing pain and stiffness. Swedana also promotes the elimination of impurities through the sweat and is a treatment used in Panchakarma as part of the detoxification process. It is ideal for reducing excess kapha dosha, especially in the springtime when it shows up as stiffness, cough, cold and congestion. Studies have shown that this treatment can increase your immunity and white blood cell count, while killing off pathogens.
